E-Mail In : World Eaters Request.

Editors Note : Due to a recent issue somebody had with a blog post (Its a long story that I wont bore you with) I am no longer going to put names at the bottom of 'e-mails in' unless I'm specifically asked to leave it in by the original sender.

E-Mail In :

Hello Gmort,

I know your not a fan of the Chaos Codex but I like to use the right codex for an army if it exists so I'd like to use it to make a Khorne themed army. I know you use Kharn in your Chaos lists sometimes so I thought you'd be the best person to ask. I also figured I'd be more likely to get an answer from you than waiting an eternity for one of the other blogs to answer me or to have Stelek tell me I'm a fucking idiot for even trying it. So I want the army to be mainly Khorne Zerkers and I don't really want to many oddball things like Obliterators in it that are meant to be rare rather than there being about 20 of the sods hanging around with every Chaos warband consisting of more than two guys. I'm also not sure about using Dreadnoughts because of the whole 'turn around and shoot your own guys' thingy. I don't care about winning every game but I'd rather not lose every game if you know what I mean, lol.

Oh and I'd like a 2000 point list if you don't mind.

Reply :

Okay a few points you raised need clarifying before we get started.

1) Themed lists have problems from the start unless it's a theme around something effective and the Chaos Codex itself isn't very well balanced in that regard. However saying that if your willing to put the time into learning an army thoroughly then you can succeed with almost anything. But be warned that an experienced player with an optimised list from a decent codex is still going to kick the shit out of you.

2) As you say in your e-mail, from a 'fluff' point of view having access to three Obliterator cults is a tad unlikely outside of an Iron Warriors force. A single cult is still a possibility though so I reserve the right to include at least one as a Heavy Support choice.

3) Chaos Dreadnoughts shoot the nearest visible unit, not the nearest unit which is an important distinction and vehicle weapon fire arcs are well defined in the rule book. I already covered the issue a long time ago in this blog post right here so I'm not going into it again. For those of you who don't agree with my interpretation feel free to point me to an official GW Errata that tells me I'm wrong.....he's a clue....there isn't one ;-)

Here's an army list with the usual caveats of 'Themed Lists are rarely optimisable' and 'The Chaos Codex sucks'....

2000 Pts - Chaos Marines Roster - Berzerker Themed List

1 Predator @ 115 pts (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Autocannon; Heavy Bolter; Havoc Launcher)

Heavy Support: Obliterators (3#, 225 pts)
   3 Obliterators @ 225 pts

Total Roster Cost: 1989

7 Melta weapons (though 4 of them aren't exactly reliable), a bit of heavy anti-tank (your target priority will need to be spot on I'm afraid) and some light anti-tank and/or anti-infantry from the Predators. In objective Missions, try to stick the objectives in your opponents deployment zone as that's where most of your army will be heading anyway.
The Lesser Daemons use Kharns Personal Icon to appear so make sure he doesn't die before they appear. Their main purpose is to give Kharn some scoring ablative wounds so he can dump his squad and still get some shit done without one lucky hit insta-killing him from across the table.

There's ten points left that you can use for some Melta-bombs or another Icon or two if your that worried about the appearance location of a handful of Lesser Daemons.

Thoughts and comments are (as usual) most welcome.

E-Mail In - Is the Chaos Codex Really That Bad?

E-Mail In :

Gmort.

You accuse the Chaos Marine Codex of being shit all the time but it seems to me like there are a lot of really good and interesting units in it that people just aren't using properly (if at all). Even though dual-lash isn't meant to be that good anymore people are still using it in tournaments and doing really well. Are you just following the 'internet wisdom' that's portrayed as true just because people like Stelek and Kirby say so or do you genuinely think it's that shit?

Sorry, were you expecting a detailed answer?

There are plenty of examples of breakdowns of the Chaos Space Marine Codex all over the internet if you want to look for them. I've even done one myself,

Is the Chaos Codex Viable Any-more?

The basic problem is that every unit ranges from slightly to grossly over-costed and a hell of a lot of it's underpowered as well. The few units that were good (relatively) can now be easily countered by the newer dex's for a variety of reasons.

If anybodies really that interested then I can do a newer breakdown of the Codex taking into account the current list building trends but I honestly think that the only viable way to use your models is through the medium of 'Counts-As'. If people want me to write one I will...

...I won't enjoy it though, lol.

E-Mail In : My Armies.

E-Mail In :

I've seen a lot of stuff on your blog helping other people with their armies and I like the style of your own Custom chapter but you haven't posted anything for ages on what your actually using yourself in games. I just wondered what your building and/or using at the moment.

Oh and greetings from Canada by the way, lol.

I haven't changed the 'Counts As' Space Wolves army list I have been using much at all from when I last posted it. I'm currently working on a bike army and attempting to update my Daemons. I'll repost the lists here for your convenience ;-)

At 2000 points I drop a Chooser of the Slain and add Las/Plas Razorbacks for the Long Fang Squads or twiddle the points of other things around (dropping the Cyclone Wolf Guard does the job nicely) and add 2 more Grey Hunter Squads. The 2 Grey Hunter squads without a Wolf Guard attached to them then become my objective holding units if the rest of the Razorbacks need to move forward.

The updated Daemon army.

This is needing a lot more conversion work in order to match the theme of my existing army than I previously imagined so don't expect to see this on the table-top any-time soon.

The bike army is more an excuse to use my Jet-bike Conversions in an army so I haven't made any final decisions about the overall army list yet. It will probably be the standard Captain, Command Squad, Biker Troops, Landspeeder mix that pretty much everybody uses ;-)

Something like this,

This is the list most subject to change as I'll probably be making more concessions to 'theme' than I normally do in order to justify the 'Jetbikes' ;-)

Also as several of my friends have needed to practice against Lash Lists due to them having infantry Grey Knight and Blood Angel Jump Pack armies (and Dual Lash is still fairly common in UK tournaments) I have been using this,

Yes I know it's pretty rubbish but I've had a lot of practice using it so I can still cause people problems with it should I put my mind to it, lol.

Some Painting Progress

So in between giving out awesome advice, helping out people with army lists, writing guest articles for blog networks and desperately trying to get my followers count above the 100 mark, I occasionally paint some models.....I know it's an action packed life I lead.....

These 'Wolf Guard' are good enough for normal games now and I'm much happier with the new darker grey colouring I've gone with on the 'Veterans/Sergeants/Champions' in my units. The old blue colour was a bit to shiny and bright to fit the armies general theme.

Wolf Guard - Angled View 1

Wolf Guard - Angled View 2

My 'Rune Priest' still needs some highlighting and unit markings. Unfortunately the Chaos Shoulder pad that I've put on the models right shoulder is a bit of an odd shape to put the Night Reapers Chapter symbol on. I may have to put the symbol on the wrong side and his 'I'm a Librarian' rank marking on the other.

Some of you might remember my first attempt at making a Space Marine on Jet Bike to use as a Command Squad guy for a potential Bike army (I have most of the models, just not the inclination currently). Well I tidied that first attempt up a little and gave it a splash of paint and am pleased enough with the result to consider making the other five that the army would need.

Trouble with Chaos.....

A fairly new acquaintance of mine has discovered the rich and interesting background that fascinates us all about the forces of Chaos.

Unfortunately for him he's attempting to represent that on the tabletop actually using the Chaos Space Marine Codex.....

Yes, I know.....

He also has developed a preference for certain units from the aforementioned codex that aren't exactly what you might call optimal.

Before we get started on attempting to make something usable for him without abandoning units he actually likes here are a couple of army lists that actually work fairly well,

First a brief overview of the unit choices.

One of my own (semi) useful lists.

MSU 'Rhino Rush'

Chaos 'Monstrous Creature' List.

There are of course other lists that work, those are just there because I'd already done posts on them and therefore didn't have to do a lot of tedious additional typing.....

Okay then, where were we?

That's right we were trying to make a bunch of unoptimised units from a poorly written codex into a viable army without spending too much extra money.....

So we somehow have to include Abaddon in this list without him being useless which means he needs transport. In this case I'm afraid our only option is a Land Raider (which is fortunate as our subject actually has one), It'll need Extra Armour as it's only really going to be used as an 'Abaddon and Escort' delivery system in this particular case. Abaddon himself needs a bodyguard of some kind which realistically needs to be able to absorb the sort of anti-armour fire-power that will otherwise be going into Abby himself.
Our ideal escort will be something with lots of bodies or a decent invulnerable save. Due to Chaos only having access to the default 'Godhammer' type of Land Raider 'lots of bodies' isn't really going to happen so we'll have to settle for a smaller unit with invulnerable saves. Our 2 options are Possessed or Chaos Terminators with a mark of Tzeentch as they have a 4+ invulnerable save and as Stu already has Terminators we'll use those.

HQ: Abaddon the Despoiler (1#, 275 pts)
   1 Abaddon the Despoiler @ 275 pts

Elite: Chaos Terminators (5#, 390 pts)
1 Chaos Terminators @ 390 pts (Icon of Tzeentch; Terminator; Land Raider)
      4 Terminator
1 Land Raider (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Extra Armor; 2x Twin-linked Lascannons; Twin Linked Heavy Bolter)

Troops are also a necessity and after looking at Stu's model list we've got a choice of Thousand Sons (Too expensive and useless in many important areas) or Khorne Berzerkers (Decent at choppy death but with minimal useful fire-power). We'll utilise the lesser of the 2 evils and take Berzerkers.

We need a Champion with Power Fist so we don't get tar-pitted by Dreadnoughts and lets be honest 4x S9 Power Fist on the charge are nice to have. They'll of course need transport and we might as well be fluffy as well and take them in Khorne's sacred number ;-)

Troops: Khorne Berzerkers (9#, 243 pts)
   7 Khorne Berzerkers @ 243 pts (Rhino)
      1 Skull Champion (Power Fist)
      1 Rhino (Twin Linked Bolter)

Troops: Khorne Berzerkers (9#, 243 pts)
   7 Khorne Berzerkers @ 243 pts (Rhino)
      1 Skull Champion (Power Fist)
      1 Rhino (Twin Linked Bolter)

We'll need an objective holding unit as well and fortunately the guy's just finished a unit of Plague Marines so they'll do the job nicely. We'll equip them so they can do other stuff as well just in case.

Troops: Plague Marines (6#, 170 pts)
   5 Plague Marines @ 170 pts (Meltagun x2; Rhino)
      1 Rhino (Twin Linked Bolter)

Now we need some long range fire-power which will come in the form of Obliterators as I know he has at least two of those.

A Brief Interlude.
Here's where we need to think of the future. Undoubtedly like so many others followers of Chaos Stu will be forced to abandon units he likes in favour of ones that work or move into the realms of 'Counts-As' and use another codex. As this point will happen eventually anyway we might as well accept it and include some-things he'll be able to use in other lists. Due to the wonder of magnets a Rhino chassis can be utilised for many different purposes as long as it's been assembled with the future in mind ;-)

Heavy Support: Predator (1#, 100 pts)
1 Predator @ 100 pts (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Autocannon; Heavy Bolter)

Heavy Support: Predator (1#, 100 pts)
1 Predator @ 100 pts (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Autocannon; Heavy Bolter)

As long as the hatches aren't glued in and the doors are magnetised these can easily become Rhino's Razorbacks or any number of other useful things.

Let's not forget those Obliterators though,

Heavy Support: Obliterators (3#, 225 pts)
   3 Obliterators @ 225 pts

Okay, so lets look at that as a whole.

The veterans amongst you will have been picking holes in this army as I've been going along and rightly so. Unfortunately the Chaos Codex does not lend itself well to optimisation and I'm afraid this is the best I can do within the given parameters.....

A HUGE project.

I have as usual got too many projects on the go at the same time.

A list of some kind may illustrate my point.

1) Shooty Space Wolves
2) Space Marine Bikers
3) Ironclads
4) New Daemon List
5) Fellblade
6) Etc.

And on it goes.

What I need is some brilliant way of turning all those ideas into one easily managed project...

No, I couldn't work out a way either. I can however work out how to turn it into two projects.

One HUGE one and a smaller one.

The smaller one (relatively) will be my new Daemon list which I will endeavour to complete a bit of each week or Brent will start getting all twitchy, lol.

The larger of the two will go something like this,

As some of you who have been following the blog for a while may know I have a 'Renegade' Chapter of my own creation called 'The Night Reapers' who have a rather fetching metallic blue colour scheme. They've been (in no particular order) Chaos Space Marines, Space Marines, Space Wolves, Blood Angels and for a brief time Black Templars.

As a consequence I have a lot of models at various stages of production with a wide variety of equipment load-outs that started off as a Space Marine Battle Company* most of which have never quite made it as a finished army (to a good painting standard anyway).

* Which was by the way the best value box set Games Workshop have ever released and should be rushed back into production as soon as possible...please...pretty, please...with sugar on top...

As the background for my Chapter (which I really must get around to compiling and publishing one day) interprets the Codex Astartes rather flexibly I can cram a lot more things into a Battle Company than traditionally would be allowed by a bunch of namby pamby loyalists ;-)

The upshot of all that is that will be attempting over the next year to have built (if it isn't yet, as I have most of this already**), under-coated (some of it is, some of it isn't) and painted (painted well I mean, as some of my earlier stuff was average at best) the following,

** It's fortunate that my Girlfriend doesn't read my blog because this lot would have easily paid for that holiday I said we couldn't afford, lol.

'Night Reapers' 2nd Company

Command.
1x Captain (he will probably be the Huron as Vulkan conversion I never finished)
1x Lieutenant
1x Company Standard Bearer
1x 'Chosen' Command Squad

2x Rhinos, 2x Razorbacks, 1x Damocles Rhino, 1 Land Raider Prometheus

Command Support.
1x Chaplain (Maybe 2 if I ever find the other one I remember buying)
1x Chief Apothecary, 3x Apothecaries (My Sanguinary Priests are actually 3rd Company so may not be getting attention any time soon, lol.)
3x Techmarines and Servitors
2x Librarians (these will be a bit more 'sorcerer' than librarian in appearance)

4x Rhino's (1 for the Apothecary with an appropriate paint-job, the other 3 for the Techmarines)

Primary.
6x Tactical Squads
2x Assault Squads
2x Devastator Squads

8 Rhino's, 8 Razorbacks

Secondary.
4x Bike Squads
3x Veteran Devastator Squads (Long Fangs, obviously)

Vehicle Armoury.
1x Venerable Dreadnought
3x Dreadnoughts
6x Ironclad Dreadnoughts

6x Vindicators
3x Predator Destructor
3x Predator Annihilator
3x Whirlwinds

6x Landspeeder Tornado
6x Landspeeder Typhoon
3x Landspeeder Tempest

Air Support.
3x Hell Blade
1x Hell Talon (I don't have one of these yet but XMas is coming...hint,hint)

Superheavy Support
1x Fellblade

And I think that's it...

With that lot done I should never have to worry about whether I can field a particular list or not ever again...I hope.

I'd initially given myself 6 months for the project and then after checking just how much I had unpainted I doubled the time frame. If any Fluff Nazis feel like telling me that a Battle Company isn't configured that way then my answer is this...It's people like you that made us want to turn renegade in the first fucking place ;-)

Thoughts, Comments and queries about why they don't have any Thunderfire Cannons*** in their armoury are (as usual) most welcome****

***Except if they're really about Thunderfire Cannons, obviously.
****Don't ask about Drop Pods either!!!

Hell Blades

So I'm lending my Chaos Hell Blades to my friend Mike for use in an Apocalypse game I've organised so I supposed I should give them some kind of basic paint job.

Which I then did*.

* It's worth emphasising at this point that me intending to do something and then actually doing it is somewhat of a rarity, lol.

Quite why the 'Night Reapers' Chapter are lending out valuable equipment to Blood Pact armies is something I haven't bothered to write into the scenario. I'll be using the 'They just fucking are, Okay?' argument, if anybody asks ;-)

Hell Blade Angled View.

Hell Blade Front View.

Hell Blade Side View.

And As A Pair.

They still need a lot of work but the basic paint-job is the 'starting point' that I can never normally motivate myself to do...

While I was doing those, my girlfriend was doing these for the same aforementioned Apocalypse game.

She refused to do them in my renegade Chapters usual metallic blue colour and did them in this rather fetching grey colour instead. If they were for herself she'd have put a lot more detail in them but as they were for me they got (by her standards anyway**) a 'quick' paint-job.

** Her painting is of a depressingly high standard and makes even my best work look like it was done by a blind, thumb-less, lobotomised Monkey with a big blunt crayon.

I'm building and painting all the guns and accessories separately in order to make everything truly modular.

Thoughts and Comments are (as usual) most welcome.

Fixing C:CSM - Part 12 - Chosen

The Chosen of the Chaos Gods.

The most hardened, callous and deadly of all Chaos Space Marines.

The Elite of the Elite.

Or Standard Chaos Space Marines with Infiltrate and a few more weapon options depending on whether you believe the 'Fluff' or their codex entry...

What went wrong...well I'll tell you...

1) Chosen should be fucking fearless. None of this 'Oh no one of my rivals has died lets run away' shit.
2) All Chosen should be able to take individual weapon options not just the 5 guys who got to the armoury first.
3) Infiltrate shouldn't be the only thing they're good at, It's nice to have I suppose but they could do with something else as well.
4) They should be better than an ordinary Chaos Space Marine in more than just weapon options.

My Solutions.

1) Add Fearless
2) More weapon options like Honour Guard, Wolf Guard Etc. get
3) Lets give them (slightly) more options for deployment.
4) Slight Stat increase (nothing major, just enough to make them a bit more 'Veteran')

Chosen Chaos Space Marines - 20 points each

One unit of Chosen may be taken for each HQ choice selected. This unit does not take up any Force Organisation Chart selections but are otherwise treated as a HQ unit.

Chosen Chaos Space Marine - WS 4, BS 4, S 4, T 4, W 1, A 2, Ld. 10, Save 3+
Aspiring Chaos Lieutenant - WS 5, BS 4, S 4, T 4, W 1, A 3, Ld. 10, Save 3+

Unit Type - Infantry, Number/Squad 5-10

Wargear
Power Armour, Bolt Pistol, Frag and Krak Grenades, Close Combat Weapon, Bolter.

Special Rules
Fearless, Veteran of a Thousand Battlefields *

* Veteran of a Thousand Battlefields - The Chosen of Chaos have spent centuries and sometimes millennia honing their battlefield skill and always ensure that they are first to get their pick of the spoils of war, also one does not survive long enough to be called 'Chosen' without knowing exactly the right place and the right time to fight... - Any Chosen unit that does not have a dedicated transport has both the 'Infiltrate' and 'Scout' special rules.

Marks
The mantle of Chosen shows more than the usual level of favour in the eyes of their patrons.

Any unit of chosen must select one of the following 'Greater' Marks of Chaos.

Greater Mark of Chaos Undivided: Gains one 're-roll' per game that may be used by the unit for any purpose - Free
Greater Mark of Khorne : +1 WS, +1A, Furious Charge - 40 Points
Greater Mark of Nurgle : +1 T, Feel no Pain, Defensive Grenades - 50 points
Greater Mark of Tzeentch : All 'Chosen' models in the unit gain a 4+ Invulnerable save - 50 points
Greater Mark of Slaanesh : +1 I, Fleet, Defensive Grenades - 35 points

Character
The future Lords of Chaos inevitably start off their careers in the ranks of the chosen.

One model may be upgraded to an Aspiring Chaos Lieutenant for 15 points.

He may take any of the options available to normal chosen. In addition he may replace his close combat weapon with the following.
- Warp Blade (+2S, Power Weapon) - 30 points

Options
Any model may replace his Bolter with
- Twin-Linked Bolter - 3 points per model
- Combi-Flamer, Combi-Melta or Combi-Plasma - 5 points per model
- Flamer - 5 points per model
- Plasmagun - 10 points per model
- Meltagun - 10 points per model

Up to two models may replace their Bolter with
- Heavy Bolter - 5 points per model
- Heavy Flamer - 5 points per model
- Missile Launcher - 10 points per model
- Multi-Melta - 10 points
- Autocannon - 15 points per model
- Plasma Cannon - 20 points per model
- Lascannon - 25 points per model

Any model may replace his Bolt Pistol and/or Close Combat weapon with
- Power Weapon - 15 points
- Power Fist - 25 points
- Lightning Claw - 15 points
- Plasma Pistol - 10 points

Any model may replace his Bolter and Bolt Pistol and Close Combat Weapon with
- A pair of Lightning Claws - 20 points

Any model may have Meltabombs for 5 points per model.
Any model may have a Personal Icon for 5 points per model

A single model per Chosen unit may carry an Icon or Banner to the Chaos Gods for 25 points. These can take almost any form but all have the following effect - Any friendly model within 12" of the bearer may re-roll failed morale or pinning tests, In addition all enemy units that are within 12" of the banner and have line of sight to it suffer a-1 penalty to all tests that use the Leadership characteristic.

Dedicated Transport.
The Squad may have a Dreadclaw, Chaos Rhino or Land Raider Dedicated Transport.

'Scout' and 'Infiltrate' give you a number of deployment options if you don't take a transport and the unit can be configured for any purpose you see fit.

Thoughts?

Note : This will probably be the last of the 'Fixing' articles I do for a month or so as I really need to get some 'Hobby' done as unfinished and barely started projects are piling up around me, lol. All the other stuff will still be appearing as normal however.
